The Theory Test and Practical Driving Test

No matter how much you may want to avoid them - both the Theory test and Practical driving tests have to be done!

So, to assist you a little here is some useful information

The Driving Theory Test

The Theory Test is split in to two (2) parts.

The first consists of the multiple choice test and the second part is the hazard perception. You sit both parts at the same time. Both parts need to achieve a pass to pass the whole test, so, if you pass one part and fail the other, both parts have to be re taken.

The multiple-choice part

Before the test starts there is a demonstartion on how it works.

You can choose to do a practice session of multiple-choice questions to get used to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice session the real test will begin.

How the multiple-choice part works:

A question and several possible answers will appear on a computer screen - you have to select the correct answer. Some questions may need more than one answer.

Note: You can move between questions and 'flag' questions that you want to come back to later on in the test.

Some car and motorcycle questions will be given as a case study. The case study will:

show a short story that five questions will be based on

focus on real life examples and experiences that you could come across when driving

Time allowed and Pass mark

57 minutes and 43 out of 50

After the multiple-choice part you can choose to have a break of up to 3 minutes before the hazard perception part starts.

The hazard perception part

Before you start the hazard perception, a short video clip about how it works will be shown.

You'll then be shown a number of video clips on a computer screen. The clips

feature everyday road scenes and contain at least one developing hazard - but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards

A developing hazard is something that may result in you having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction.

How the hazard perception scoring works:

The earlier you notice a developing hazard and make a response, the higher you will score. The most you can score for each developing hazard is five points.

To get a high score you need to:

respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development

and press the mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing

You won't be able to review your answers to the hazard perception test.

If you click continuously or in a pattern during a clip a message will appear at the end. It will tell you that you have scored zero for that particular clip.

The Practical Driving Test

The driving test is designed for you to show your practical driving skills and demonstrate understanding of the Highway Code and the theory of driving safely.

Throughout the test the examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving.

The driving test is straightforward and has been designed to see if you

can drive safely in differing road and traffic conditions and

understand The Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving ability

So long as you show the standard required, you will pass your driving test.

There are no pass or fail quotas.

On arrival for your practical driving test you must take certain documents with you. You must also bring an appropriately insured and licensed vehicle suitable for the test.

You must bring an appropriately insured and licensed vehicle, displaying L-plates

The vehicle must be suitable for the purpose of the test.

If your vehicle doesn't meet the rules:

-your test will be cancelled

-and you may lose your fee

Most learner drivers take their practical test in their driving instructor's car.

However, you can take the test in your own vehicle if it meets certain rules.

If you have taken driving lessons or an intensive course with us you will be taking the test in the car you were learning in - unless you choose to use your own car

Using a manual or automatic vehicle

You can take your driving test in either a manual or automatic vehicle. However, if you pass your test in an automatic you'll only get a licence to drive an automatic.

Documents you must take to the test

You must take the following documents with you.

If you do not bring the right documents the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) may refuse to carry out the test you may lose your fee

Take both parts of your driving licence!

You must bring your theory test pass certificate (or confirmation) if you are not exempt.

You must also bring both parts of your driving licence - the photocard and the paper counterpart. If you arrive without the correct documents you will not take the test plus you will lose the test fee

If you have an old-style paper licence, you must take your signed driving licence and you must also bring a valid passport.

No other form of photographic identification will be accepted.
